A large aspect of the FIFA 2010 World Cup was the utilisation of public space, and the galvanisation of public energy. One of the most successful exercises in this respect was the Cape Town Fan Walk – a pedestrian meander designed to shepherd fans in from Cape Town through to the Cape Town Stadium.

A 2.6km route running from Cape Town Station to the Cape Town Stadium, and incorporating two public squares – St. Andrews Square in the city, and the Stadium Forecourt – the route took advantage of Cape Town’s lively nightlife, infectious urban energy, and fantastic scenery, infusing these with World Cup fan spirit and national pride.

The project however also had a long-term benefit in ensuring a post-World Cup legacy of public space in the heart of the city – a place for office workers and residents to relax during the day, and simply immerse themselves in the energy of the city.
