'REFLECTIONS & OPPORTUNITIES'

 

Designing South Africa is publishing a book entitled 'Reflections & Opportunities' in English and Portuguese highlighting the many processes, observations and lessons that emerged from the 2010 FIFA World CupTM in South Africa. The book will feature contributions from some of the finest minds in the industry on a range of topics including urban development, business, tourism, design and contemporary South African culture. The combination of these themes and the global spectrum from which they come, will give a diverse and multifaceted view on developing nation cities – and the World Cup’s role in achieving South Africa’s dreams of a more integrated and accessible society.

The book contains contributions from internationally acclaimed editors and writers from illustrious global publications including the Financial Times (UK), Novum (Germany), Wallpaper* (UK) and AgitProp (Brazil). Essay contributors include Edgar Pieterse, the director of the African Centre for Cities (University of Cape Town) and Oliver Steunkel, Associate Professor of International Relations at the Fundaçao Getulio Vargas in São Paulo. Dr Kamilla Swart and Dr Urmilla Bob have conducted extensive research on the urban legacies of the 2010 World Cup and have contributed an essay on Social Legacies of the mega event.

These written contributions are all complemented by a captivating photographic record of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and a visual documentary of the development of South African Cities in relation to the mega-event.

'Reflections & Opportunities' is edited by Designing South Africa Director, Zahira Asmal and features a foreword by CEO of the World Cup Organising Committee (South Africa), Dr Danny Jordaan.
